The L-3 Communications/EDI T-AGOS 19 steering system provides independent, dual speed operation for each of the vessel's two rudders. Each rudder is independently positioned from the pilothouse, the winch/ship console and from the steering gear room. When autopilot or hand mode is selected at the pilothouse or hand mode is selected at the winch/ship console, the rudders automatically move in synchronism to the desired position.
Each rudder is powered by two hydraulic cylinders and a dual, redundant, hydraulic power unit. Thus, there are 4 hydraulic pumps per vessel. Each hydraulic pump contains two sections to provide dual speed control of each rudder and is powered by a 40 HP electric motor. The hydraulic cylinders have an 8" O.D. and a 17" stroke. Hydraulic fluid is provided to each pair of cylinders at 19.2 GPM and 3,000 PSI in order to produce the 4.4 million inch pounds of torque required to turn each rudder.
