History

L-3 PacOrd was founded as Pacific Ordnance and Electronics Company in San Francisco, California as an informal partnership in 1951 and was formally incorporated in 1956. During the late 1950s, L-3 PacOrd expanded its West Coast presence by establishing facilities in San Diego and Long Beach, California; Portland, Oregon; and Seattle, Washington. The corporate headquarters was moved from San Francisco to Long Beach in the early 1960s.

Over the next ten years, support facilities were established in the ports of Baltimore, Maryland; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; New York, New York and Jacksonville, Florida. All L-3 PacOrd facilities are designed to routinely open and close as workload requirements increase or decrease in that area. Presently, L-3 PacOrd has facilities in San Diego, California; Norfolk, Virginia and Jacksonville, Florida.

In June of 1976, L-3 PacOrd became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dynalectron Corporation. During this time, L-3 PacOrd's growth resulted in the formation of two divisions - Ship Repair and Technical Services.

In 1984, the corporate headquarters of L-3 PacOrd was relocated to San Diego, California. Four years later, in November of 1988, the Ship Repair division of L-3 PacOrd was acquired by Power & Control Systems Group. This acquisition made Power & Control Systems Group the leading independent repair specialist of shipboard equipment in the United States.

As part of Power & Control Systems Group, L-3 PacOrd is able to utilize the complete resources of SPD and its subsidiaries:

  • SPD Electrical Systems, a leader in circuit-breaker design, engineering, manufacturing and testing for ruggedized applications

  • SPD Switchgear, a provider of electrical power control and distribution products for commercial, industrial and military applications

  • Power Paragon, specializing in power-conversion technology and advanced power systems for mission-critical applications

  • Henschel, supplier of field-proven, technologically advanced electronic ship control and internal communications systems

In 1998, Power & Control Systems Group was acquired by L-3 Communications, a leading merchant supplier to aerospace, military and commercial primes. Based in New York, L-3 Communications serves the Department of Defense, select U.S. government intelligence agencies, aerospace and defense prime contractors and commercial telecommunication and cellular customers.
